Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates fills an important gap by supporting trails, education, and our natural world. Your donation helps us do this work—and you can benefit too! Here are three smart ways to give:
1. Donate Investments
Have appreciated stock? Consider donating it directly to MedWheel instead of selling it. For example:
- You bought 100 shares of Apple at $40/share. Today, they’re worth $18,000.
- Selling the stock to donate cash would trigger a taxable $17,800 capital gain.
- By donating the stock instead, you avoid taxes on the gain AND claim the full value as a tax deduction.
MedWheel receives the full value tax-free, and you maximize your donation. To set up a transfer, contact investment advisor Ryan Turbyfill at Capstone Investment Financial Group.
2. Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
If you’re over 70 ½ with a retirement account, the IRS requires you to take annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), which are taxable income. Instead, direct all or part of your RMD (up to $100,000) directly to MedWheel.
- Why? The funds won’t count as income for you, but they’ll make a big difference for trails.
Ask your advisor or brokerage firm to set up a QCD—it’s a win-win!
3. Use a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)
A DAF is perfect for spreading out your charitable giving over time, especially after a financial windfall like selling property or receiving an inheritance. Here’s how it works:
- Contribute to the fund and deduct the full amount in the same year.
- Invest the funds and direct donations to MedWheel over multiple years.
- Any growth in the fund is tax-free when donated.
This lets you plan your giving, maximize tax benefits, and provide steady support for MedWheel. Capstone Investment Financial Group can help set up your DAF—learn more here.
Every Contribution Counts
Whether you’re donating stocks, retirement funds, or through a DAF, your support keeps trails thriving and accessible for everyone. Thank you for investing in MedWheel’s mission!
